Sue and I have always had a heart to work with disadvantaged people who reside in developing nations.
Soon after we were married at the age of 20, we travelled to Papua New Guinea with an organization called ‘Youth With A Mission’ commonly known as YWAM and we remained there for the next four years.
During that time, we taught in schools, worked with agricultural and feeding programs. The district we operated in was the Okapa Region located in the Fayentina Valley.
On our first day, we moved into an old-abandoned school building on top of a hill, 6,500 feet above sea level and my first assignment was to dig a long-drop toilet that had no roof for my English bride.
We bathed mainly under a school downpipe when it rained and sometimes in the local river. However, things changed when Sue fell pregnant with our first child. Suzie upgraded and sat in a baby’s bath.
These times were truly exciting. Besides working alongside these beautiful New Guinea people who lived in grass houses, we were able to teach the local children by establishing a Pigin Primary School.
Even though we were rookies and thought we were there to teach the locals everything we knew, things quickly reversed. We learnt more over the next four years than we had ever done in the past.
The local people in our district had only seen Europeans about eight years prior to our arrival. During our stay a Hageri, in the Duantina Valley, we revived the old Bush Medical Centre. There with our limited training and medical supplies we diagnosed and treated many serious conditions.
On our return to Australia, we continued our vision in helping people less fortunate than ourselves. In 1995 we pioneered a program known as ‘Operation Kenya.’ We purchased, collected and freighted a container full of much needed goods to a school and orphanage in Kenya.
We also raised finances to build two orphanages in Africa.
At this present time, Sue and I have concluded that, ‘we need to do things that will live on after we pass on,’ but as we are getting older, we recognise we need the help of others and as much help as we can get.
